The same form, a new character: changes of upholstery

Four comparisons from the workshop show how the choice of cloth, color, and pattern can change the presence of an armchair — while the lines and proportions of the frame stay.

New upholstery is not only a change of cloth. Before anything is cut, we check the direction of the pattern, the meeting of back and seat, and the way the color works beside the wood.

On a chair with an exposed frame the cloth has to follow the curves. On a wingback, a combination of cloths can emphasize different areas, and on a modern chair a quiet, plain cloth lets the form speak.

The comparisons in the gallery are from the Restorno archive. Each pair shows two states of the same piece; which photograph is “before” changes from image to image, so the captions describe them as a comparison and do not assume a fixed order.
