Splitting a large sofa into two units

A structural solution for a large sofa: opening the upholstery, dividing the frame into two units, and reinforcing and rebuilding them so the parts can be joined and still read as one sofa.

When a large sofa will not pass a doorway or a stair, the problem is sometimes the structure, not the upholstery. In the case recorded here the sofa was opened to the frame, and we looked for a way to divide it into two units without losing stability or the outline.

After the split, each unit was given new ends, the frames were reinforced, and the springs and filling layers were put back. The upholstery was closed so that, in ordinary use, the two units look and work as one sofa.

This is a solution fitted to a particular case, not a procedure that suits every sofa. Before it is done, the frame, the joints, and the condition of the upholstery materials have to be checked.
